Traveling again

Travel 280 miles to a writers meeting? Absolutely! That's how much I love my fellow writers.

Not A Poser

PROFESSIONALLY
Travel 280 miles, each way, to an writers meeting? Absolutely! Thats how much I love my fellow writers in the IDAhope chapter of the American Fiction Writers Ass’n.

Wednesday: I rode a shuttle to Boise, so I could write while somebody else did the driving. (Thanks, William!)

Thursday: I was staying with some close friends, Sherry & Tim, and they both work outside the home, so I pretty much had the day and all of the “guest house” to myself. Sherry and Tim are known for their hospitality anyway, but they especially blessed me by giving me this little writing retreat. It’s easier to focus where there’s no background noise, those nasty reminders that that I should vacuum or muck out the bathroom or fold the clothes heaped on the dining table. I so needed that little “retreat.”

Thursday evening: Dinner before the meeting with Angela, Carol, and Val, three precious friends and talented ACFW members. (Thanks for the ride, Angela. Thanks for dinner, Carol.) Then I spoke at the meeting, talking about a beasty I still wrestle with: tags. You know, “he said,” “she said.”

Friday: Sherry and I drove around Boise, ooh-ing and aah-ing some stately old houses (we both love architecture) and enjoying a leisurely lunch at the old Owyhee Hotel. Then we hit a fabric store that caters to quilters, where I got to watch her test drive a quilting sewing machine. (sigh) I love fabric stores, love to sew, but it's a matter of picking my wars; writing requires all my time and attention right now.

Friday evening: Time to catch the shuttle back to Idaho Falls. Did I get any work done this time? Not much. There were only five of us on the bus, so we were a cozy and talkative group. I’m basically a loner, so I don’t seek out crowds or social situations. But how could I pass up the opportunity to listen to people’s stories and to analyze and gather research for the next book character or plot situation? I was so fried that I was better off just chillin’ anyway.

PERSONALLY
Today gave me a fabulous homecoming, as Harry and I spent the day with our eldest son, Mike, and our granddaughter. The next time you head to Yellowstone Park, make sure you pass through Idaho Falls on your way. Then stop by Hot Diggity Dog for lunch. One of the delicacies on the menu is what our family calls a chili-chimi-dog. Think Nathan hot dog, split down the middle, smothered in spicy chili and grated cheddar cheese, and wrapped in a flour tortilla. Then deep fry it. Yummy! We usually hit Hot Diggity every weekend; I look forward to it all week.

Hugs, Sherrie ;-}
